We know that our computer is a very important thing in our lives so we need to protect it from all the internal and external threats. For external threats we use cleaning materials but what can we do if something hamper our computer system from inside? These things which severely damage our computer system have many names like, computer virus, malware, spy ware, Trojan horses and to defend our computer system from these threats we need to use security software. But what is security software? It’s the term to refer any computer program or library whose motive is to secure a computer system or computer network.
There are many varieties in these kind of software like Antivirus software, Anti key logger, Cryptographic software, Firewall, Intrusion detection system (IDS), Spyware remover, Sandbox. But among all of them Antivirus software is important as this software is used to prevent, detect, and remove malware, including but not limited to computer viruses, computer worm, trojan horses, spyware and adware. Different antivirus software use different methods to detect and remove threats from computer and networking systems like some use Signature based detection, some use Heuristics and some root kit detection. An anti keylogger is that software which is specifically designed to detect keystroke logger software. This software often incorporates the ability to delete or at least immobilize hidden keystroke logger software on our computer. Encryption and decryption of data is done by Encryption software and the purpose of encryption is to block third parties from recovering the original information.
A firewall is a set of devices which permit or deny network transmissions on the basis of rules and is frequently used to protect networks from unauthorized access. To check network or system for malicious activities or policy violations and produces reports to a Management Station we use intrusion detection system (IDS). To remove spyware we could use spyware remover software too. The sandbox is that security mechanism which typically provides a tight and controlled set of resources for guest programs to run in, such as scratch space on disk and memory. So there are many ways in which we can protect our computer and networking system from any threats.
